Meet Hannah. You may remember her from our time with her and Will for their engagement session a few months back. When we met her several weeks ago to shoot her bridals we had an idea of how we wanted to approach the session. She had decided on the Julie Rogers Theatre in Beaumont, which has kind of become our second home as it offers a fantastic backdrop for bridal photography and an escape from the grueling heat of summer.
Finding something new in each session is a constant challenge. In bridal photography we of course use words like elegant and beautiful. But what are we trying to see in each of our brides as individuals and how do we capture that? Is it enough to capture beautiful portraits of a bride standing and smiling in a traditional fashion and call it a day? I’ve said many times that our goal in photography is to show an honest and genuine look of who you are at this time in your life. A beautiful, high quality image is sort of the default expectation if you are hiring a professional, but our personal challenge is to look deeper.
Many if not most photographers today identify as “natural light” photographers meaning they do not use any sort of artificial light source when photographing their subjects. In our case, we have a bit of a hybrid approach depending on the situation. On the day of Hannah’s bridals we took advantage of an extremely bright day, which cast lots of interesting light through the gigantic, ceiling high windows. In photography the texture and depth of an image derives from the use of shadows. Our goal with Hannah was to paint a beautiful set of images while giving her depth and interest in an artistic way. Of course she certainly made our job easy by just being herself! I hope you enjoy these as much as we do!
