The more I learn about photography the more I cannot help but look for the quality, direction, color, and source of light in every room I enter. It’s like the Jason Bourne movies where Matt Damon is sitting in a diner and naming off all the features of the people around him, all the exit points of the building, and knowing how to access potential threats instinctively without even knowing why. (Spoiler alert: He’s a spy who lost his memory)
For us, we’ve been studying this stuff for a long time, but over the last year we have worked insanely hard to ‘see’ light in ways that we never quite understood before. We are digging deeper and when you pursue knowledge in any area long enough you simply can’t get it out of your head. All photographers at some point will talk about the golden hour which is that time right around sunset. The really interesting thing about this time has less to do with the light actually being golden (although that is pretty cool) and more about how the light begins to soften, creates interesting contrast, and overall becomes more flattering to your subject. How often do you see photographers post images from a nasty, overcast day? Not very often. The very best of em’ can certainly make any day work, but nothing beats the natural beauty of a perfect day.
That said, when we met to shoot Ashley’s maternity photos it was a really really good day. I actually met Ashley while filming some promo video work for Cormier Homes up in Lumberton. Ashley is a killer design specialist and you should really see some of the homes she has had a hand in building. In fact go see a few I’ve put on youtube here:
So while working on these walkthrough projects I learned that Ashley was preggo with her first! That felt like it was yesterday, but here she is just a few weeks from having a baby girl! As a dad I can tell you that family photography in Southeast Texas is very important to us. We call ourselves wedding photographers, but we certainly put that under the broader category of Family Photographers here in Beaumont. Ashley and her husband Sid were great during their shoot and we really enjoyed our time with them. Shoots are always a creative adventure for us so I hope you enjoy these highlights from their gallery!
