Here we are strolling through Summer and then BAM! July is on the way out and it will be August in just a few days. We’ve had a fantastic summer of memorable shoots, weddings galore, and of course lots of BBQ Brisket slow smoked at home by yours truly (Kyle). Being a Wedding Photographer in Southeast Texas means we make a little hop to Houston from time to time, which is great because we usually make a day trip out of it, find something good to eat, and explore some new locations we don’t often shoot in. So when Sarah and Derek asked to have their engagement photos taken where they are in Houston…well, we said yes!
So here’s the thing about Houston, it’s really big. You knew that. Our challenge is to be well prepared ahead of our shoot so that we don’t use all of our time and light driving around town. Usually we pick a certain spot and stay there because even a short drive in Houston to a new area can take forever. This time we were able to find a few new places and we pulled off the timing perfectly.
Our first stop was to a place called the Color Wall. True to its name, someone literally painted a huge brick wall a bunch of colors and just like that it’s an insanely popular place for photographers. Seriously, when we started shooting we had to work FAST as there were photographers of all kinds jumping in and out. It was kind of neat to be around a lot of people engaged in photography. There were obvious groups of small families, a few other couples, some hobbyists, and even some street fashion photographers with a few models coming and going at all times. I called them ‘street youths’ just to be coy. The whole thing was like a giant hipster Apple commercial, which as a photographer you can’t help but like.
From the wall of cool people we moved on to a neighborhood taken right out of a storybook. All I know is we were on busy, traffic filled roads and then we were not as a few turns took us to this shaded wonderland filled with majestic Oaks. Needless to say we were pretty excited. The sun peeked through to give us great light and contrast, and we met Max who thought the area was pretty cool as well. I’m pretty sure having Max out was Derek’s favorite part of the day. Our last stop took us to an old favorite in Herman Park. It had been quite a while since we visited here. Oh yes, and Derek didn’t waste the opportunity either. He was all for walking around the park because he was on the look out while playing Pokemon: Go. Yep. It has come to this even on engagement shoots. (I grew up as the world’s largest Pokemon nerd by the way)
In the midst of our summer heat wave, we were treated to a rare reprieve as the breeze rolled towards us across the lake. I know it was a treat for these two to lounge by the water as we finished up the session. All in all we had a great time getting to know Sarah and Derek. April 2017 will be here soon!
