Photography: Why we do what we do and want to do more

Well believe it or not Parfait Photo is almost a whole year old.  We’ve had a lot of fun, excitement, nerves, and yes frustrations over our first year in business.  We have learned so much, met a lot of wonderful people and stretched ourselves to learn what running a photography business is all about.

Life certainly has many twists.  As I sit here typing (up way too late as always) I’m still scratching my head trying to answer a familiar question we get all the time: “What got you started in photography?  Did you major in photography?”  Quite honestly the answer is photography was never for a moment an interest for me.  In fact, I generally hated photography because to me photography was associated with family gatherings where more frames per second were shot at you with handheld cameras than Peter Jackson’s upcoming Hobbit movie.  (For all you non-nerds out there the movie is being shot at one of the highest resolutions and FPS ever)

Now, I find myself grinning, laughing, commenting, staring, and dwelling on images I see from ours and other photographer’s shoots and excited every time we get the chance to meet new clients.  We see nervous couples slowly get comfortable in front of the camera until they forget we are there.  We see little ones do silly things and newborns stretch and yawn in their first days born to this world.  We get to see God’s amazing journey of marriage begin in two people and save those moments for their grandchildren to enjoy.  Along the way we build relationships with people and become a part of their memory making.  I always chuckle when Kimberly becomes a defacto wedding coordinator to a nervous bride asking advice on planning her big day or even during the event itself!

There are then the days where I stare in awe at a sunset and try my best to capture the artistry of creation while feeling completely inadequate to do so.  Photography compels me to slow down and take in the small beautiful things all around us even when my camera is tucked away at home.  Our hope is that we will continue to make memories with people and discover God’s creation more every day.  We are humbled by the compliments, appreciation and love from our clients and want to say thank you for making our first year simply awesome. That’s all for now!
